How to Check if Your Drywall Is Smooth

When you’re installing and mudding drywall, the last thing you want is to leave behind lumps and bumps. Not only do those badly textured sections make the finished wall look bad, but they’re also hard to paint, since you have to manually fill in every nook and cranny. Before cleaning and putting away all of your drywall tools, check the wall to ensure that it's perfectly smooth. Otherwise, you’ll have to bring the mud and drywall knife back out to finish the job.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for about an hour after the drywall mud has been applied so that it has a chance to set. Otherwise, you will leave indentations in the wall.

    • 2

Examine the wall closely for rough spots, visible lumps and indentations. Look for sections where it looks like the drywall mud has “broken up” like stretched-out wet clay as it was applied.

    • 3

Run your hand gently against the wall feeling for any non-visible bumps or indented spots. Make note of where they are so they can be repaired.
