How to Tack Wire to Drywall for Garage Door Eyes

Tacking the low-voltage wire for the safety eyes on a garage door opener requires special insulated staples. These staples usually come with the opener or replacement safety eyes. They have a small dielectric piece of insulator under the curve of the staple. While there are special staple guns for this type of staple, a hammer is all that is necessary to drive them into drywall. Before tacking wire to drywall for the garage door eyes, plan the route for the wire from the eyes to the opener head.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the garage door eyes to the door tracks according to the manufacturers instructions. Some manufacturers hardwire the low-voltage wire to each unit, while others require inserting the end connector into the back of each eye when installing them on the track.

    • 2

Unroll the low-voltage wire on both eyes. This helps prevent snagging and knots as you tack the wire to the drywall. Grab the last six inches of wire closest to the garage door eye. Hold the wire against the wall, allowing a small amount of slack in the wire between the eye and the wall.

    • 3

Place the tips of the insulated staple around each side of the wire. Tap the insulated staple into the wall until the wire is snug. The insulated part of the staple is the only portion that should touch the wire.

Run the remaining wire up the wall and across the ceiling. The last staple in the ceiling should be over the rear of the opener head so the end of the wire drapes over the motor. Tap the insulated staples around the wire every 12 inches.
