How to Apply Concrete Between Bricks

Although it is common for bricks and mortar to last for decades, it is not unheard of for a wall or a building to need repointing. In these situations, removing the original mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar is a common activity. However, sometimes mortar is not the best option and something more hard-wearing is required. At times like these it is important to know how to apply concrete between bricks, to provide a solid adhesive to keep the brickwork together.

Instructions

    • 1

Chip away the existing concrete or mortar from between the bricks, using a hammer and joint chisel. Remove the mortar to a depth of 1 inch. Brush away any debris left in the gap you have formed using a paintbrush. It is important that the gap between bricks is clean so the concrete has a clear surface to bond to.

Mix the concrete. Mix together 1 part cement with a small amount of water, 2 parts sand and 4 parts gravel. The precise quantities required for each “part” will depend on the amount of brickwork to be filled with concrete. Add only sufficient water to make a thick concrete paste, rather than a watery solution.

Apply the concrete to the brickwork using a trowel and jointer tool. Push the concrete into the gap between the bricks to make sure it entirely fills the gap you chiseled out earlier. Scrape away any excess concrete to leave a smooth surface, and brush away any residual concrete on the bricks using a hand-held brush. Allow the concrete time to set.
