How to Fix a Wall That Is Rough and the Old Paint Has Peeled Off

Aged paint loses its adhering abilities and peels away from the wall, creating cracks and flakes. The wall behind the paint has to be refinished and made smooth in order to get your new paint finish to adhere to the wall properly. A rough and peeling wall is not difficult to repair but does take some time, depending on how large the space is.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape the loose paint away by using a paint scraper. Paint scrapers are available in hardware stores and make it easier to remove loose paint from a wall. Gently drag the scraper across the wall in all directions until you have removed as much loose paint as possible.

    • 2

Sand the rest of the loose paint away by using 800-grit sandpaper. High numbered grits of sandpaper are rough enough to remove loose paint and smooth the area, but not so harsh that you sand too deeply into the wall. Rub the sand paper across the wall in a back and forth motion until it has a smooth texture. Rub your hand across the wall to feel for inconsistencies on the surface and smooth them down with the sandpaper.

Repair any damaged areas, such as holes and deep dents and scratches, with drywall spackle. For wood walls, use wood putty. Fill in the damaged area with the spackle or putty, using the spackle spreader. Wait for it to dry then sand it so that it is even with the rest of the wall. Paint spreads more evenly over smooth surfaces so check to make sure you have addressed all problem areas before continuing.

Prime the wall to cover any of the leftover wall color and to seal in porous areas. Primers give walls an even surface for new paints to spread. Wait for the primer to fully dry before painting. Refer to the primer manufacturer’s suggestions for drying times.

Paint the walls using a high quality brand of paint. Low quality paints tend to have a watery consistency that require multiple coats to fully cover a surface. High quality paints spread more evenly, giving you a professional looking finish. Use a paint roller to spread paint over large areas in an up and down motion, similar to a "W". Use the paint brush to help you get into small corners.
