Wash the surface area around the crack using a damp washcloth, and let it air dry.
Sand the crack and the surrounding area with a 180-grit sanding block. Eliminate any chips or protruding pieces of sheetrock by sanding them smooth.
Apply a thin layer of joint compound over the entire crack and overlapping onto the sheetrock on both sides by 1/2 inch. Smooth the joint compound into the crack using the edge of a putty knife. Scrape away excess by angling the blade of the putty knife slightly. Let the joint compound dry for the time listed on the manufacturer’s label, generally from two to 12 hours, depending on the brand.
Sand the joint compound area smooth using a 220-grit sanding block. Wipe away debris with a damp washcloth or dry tack cloth.
Coat the repaired area with a layer of elastic coating spray. This will prevent any further stress or creeping cracks and provide the area with a little “give.” Let the spray dry completely before painting over the repair area.
