How to Fill a Gap at Your Baseboard by Your Door

Gaps around baseboards and door trim allows air into your home as well as insects and debris. Gaps occur where the baseboard meets the wall and where the material meets doors and door frames. Use silicone caulking to fill the gaps along baseboards, door trim and any cracks close to the baseboards. Clear silicone acrylic caulking is available at area home improvement, hardware and retail superstores and at online hardware outlets.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a utility knife, held at a 45-degree angle, to cut the tip off of a tube of clear silicone acrylic caulking. Only cut off the tip -- this yields a 1/8-inch hole -- large enough to dispense caulking and not waste the sealant.

    • 2

Pull the push-rod on a caulking gun toward you to open up the gun. Insert the tube of caulking into the gun and push the rod into the end of the tube until the rod stops. Squeeze the gun’s trigger to push a small amount of caulking out of the tube. Wear work gloves to get a better grip on the caulking gun’s trigger.

    • 3

Wet a soft cloth or rag under warm water and wring out excess water. Wipe the area surrounding the gap on the baseboard with the damp cloth or rag to remove any loose dust and debris.

    • 4

Hold the caulking gun with the tube’s tip flat against the end of the gap by the door you want to fill. Squeeze the gun’s trigger and move the gun toward you to lay a uniform bead of caulking into the gap. Repeat step until the gap is filled.

    • 5

Fold the cloth or rag in half and run it over the wet caulking to smooth the sealant down. The caulking will air dry within two to three minutes. Repeat Steps 3 through 5 to fill the next gap.
