How to Hang a Heavy Mirror on a Common Plaster Cinder Block Wall

Heavy mirrors need solid anchoring to the wall to keep them from slipping and crashing to the floor. Cinder block walls are one of the hardest walls to drill holes into, but special anchors are made to hold screws snug. Purchase masonry bits for drilling into the cinder block to save your regular bits from the dulling action of the concrete. A new bit will make the job much easier and also save the battery on your drill.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the mirror against the wall and mark the outline lightly with a pencil. Remove the mirror and set aside in a safe place until you get the anchors in place. Mark the positions of your mirror clips on the wall and ensure they are level.

    • 2

Buy the right size two-step anchors by dividing the weight of the mirror by the number of anchors you need to hold the mirror. Since the weight of the mirror is almost totally sheer weight, you do not need large anchors. Plan to position at least two or three anchors along the bottom of the mirror and two on each side, or more for extra large mirrors.

    • 3

Try placing the screw of the anchor through the hole in the mirror clip as a dry run to ensure that they fit together.

    • 4

Drill out the holes for the anchors, using a drill bit as wide as the plastic sleeve of the anchor. Measure the depth of the anchor and mark the same depth on the drill bit using a piece of masking tape. Keep the drill perpendicular to the wall to form straight holes.

    • 5

Place the plastic sleeve of the anchor in the hole and tap in place with a hammer until it is almost flush with the wall.

    • 6

Hold the mirror against the wall with the aid of a helper. Screw the anchor screws through the mirror clips and into the plastic anchor sleeves, but without tightening. Use a screwdriver to slowly tighten the clips against the glass until they are just touching the glass. Over-tightening will crack the mirror.
