Removing Sand-Textured Walls

Textured walls aren’t for everyone. Sand-textured walls are usually used to hide imperfections in the wall but in the wrong hands can leave your walls rough and unappealing. Getting rid of the sand texture on walls is not an easy job, but it’s possible if you’re ready for some labor-intensive work. Not only does the texture have to be removed, but the walls also need to be smoothed down and primed over for a finished look.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your furniture from the room and cover all the floors with the drop cloths. Put on the goggles.

    • 2

Fill the spray bottle with warm water. Spray the wall with the water liberally and allow the water to soak in. Hold the scrapper at an angle and scrape the sand texture from the walls. Avoid denting the wallboard when you scrape.

    • 3

Use the sanding screen to sand down any uneven areas in the wall. Don’t break the paper on the wall with the sanding.

    • 4

Dampen the sponge with water and wipe down the wall. Vacuum the room well.

    • 5

Apply the joint compound to the wall and smooth it out with the wall knife into a layer 1/8-inch thick. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 6

Sand over the wall again with the sanding screen to create a flat surface. Vacuum up the dust.

    • 7

Apply another layer of joint compound to the walls in small amounts and smooth it out. Allow it to dry for several hours.

    • 8

Wipe the wall down with a damp sponge once dry. Paint over the whole wall with a neutral colored primer.
