How to Remove the Adhesive for a Laminate Backsplash

Laminate backsplashes are inexpensive and come in numerous styles and colors to fit in with any kitchen design. They consist of thin sheets of plastic with a compressed wood backing of varying thicknesses. They effectively protect the wall behind a sink from water damage and are typically installed using adhesive. If you decide to remove the backsplash, the adhesive residue often remains on the wall afterward. Removing the leftover adhesive requires multiple approaches.

Plastic tarp
Step stool or chair
Heat-resistant gloves
Putty knife
Heat gun
Vacuum

Instructions

  Put on heat-resistant gloves and plug the cord of a heat gun into a nearby electrical outlet. Spread a plastic tarp over the sink area to prevent any of the adhesive from falling into the drain and clogging it up.

  Reach up to the top of the backsplash area, using a step stool or chair if needed to reach it easily.

  Turn the heat gun on and hold the nozzle at least 12 inches away from the wall surface. Hover the hot air over the laminate adhesive for approximately 10 seconds. Keep the heat gun moving at all times and work in approximately 12 inch by 12 inch wall sections.

  Turn off the heat gun and set it aside. Place a putty knife at the top or bottom of the section, depending on which you find easier. Scrape the knife blade firmly along the wall to detach the loosened adhesive.

  Wipe the adhesive residue onto a paper towel and repeat the process over the entire area you heated. Work quickly to prevent the adhesive from cooling, which rehardens it.

  Continue heating and scraping the backsplash area until all of the adhesive is removed from the wall.

  Roll up the tarp and throw it away. Vacuum any remaining adhesive flakes from the counter or sink using a vacuum.
