Drywall Fractures

Fractured drywall looks unattractive and leaves a structure vulnerable to further damage. Simply caulking the cracks is a temporary solution, but movement in the wall will eventually weaken the repair. You can permanently patch fractured drywall with common hardware tools and supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a groove on each side of the fracture, using a utility knife. This will remove any dirt trapped inside the crack.

    • 2

Hammer nails on each side of the fracture into the wood behind the drywall. Drive a new pair of nails every 6 inches along the length of the fracture. This will prevent movement in the damaged part of the wall.

    • 3

Apply a strip of drywall tape along the fracture so it covers the nail heads. There should be an equal amount of tape on either side of the fracture. Smooth out the tape with a taping knife.

    • 4

Spread drywall compound over the tape, using a taping knife. Allow the compound to dry overnight and then apply a second coat. Allow the second coat to dry before sanding.

    • 5

Sand the drywall compound with fine-grit sandpaper to blend it in with the rest of the wall.
