Patching Holes in Cinder Block Walls

Cinder block walls are thick and sturdy, and usually are used to form basement walls. A crack or hole in a cinder block wall can damage the structural integrity of the wall and sometimes allow water to seep through it. With common building and repair supplies and beginner skills, it only takes one weekend's worth of work to patch a hole or crack in a cinder block wall and to waterproof it against further damage.

Things You'll Need

  • Cement
  • Fine sand
  • Water
  • Trowel
  • Spray bottle
  • Epoxy or latex waterproof mix
  • Stiff paintbrush

Instructions

    • 1

Mix together one part cement with two parts fine sand. Mix in just enough water to form a paste-like mortar.

    • 2

Press the mortar into the hole using a trowel, starting at the top and working downwards. Force the mortar into the hole to fill it tightly.

    • 3

Scrape off excess mortar to flatten it against the wall and allow it to dry overnight.

    • 4

Prepare the epoxy or latex waterproof mix according to the instructions on the package.

    • 5

Spray a fine mist of water onto the patch to dampen it slightly and brush the waterproof mix on top of the entire patch with a stiff paintbrush, brushing in a circular motion. Apply the mixture to the bottom of the wall first, then move up.

    • 6

Allow the mixture to dry, then spray enough water onto the patch to soak it thoroughly. Allow the water to dry overnight.

    • 7

Spray the patch with water again and apply a second coat of the waterproof mixture.
