How to Paint Over a Stain on a Wall

Stains on your walls can be embarrassing. You can try painting over them with regular wall paint, but the stain may just bleed back through the cover-up, especially if it is an oily or dark stain. To completely hide the problem area and prevent it from showing its face again, you need to use a slightly different approach and the right kind of products. This fix only takes a few hours to complete.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the wall with a dye-free degreasing cleaner. Wipe the area down with a damp sponge to remove any surface dirt, then wipe the area with a soft cloth. Let it dry completely.

    • 2

Tape drop cloths down underneath the stained wall to protect your flooring.

    • 3

Apply an oil-based primer with a roller over the stain. Feather out the edges a few inches beyond the stain to blend it. Let the primer dry for four hours.

    • 4

Apply an oil-based paint (that matches the color of the existing paint) with a roller over the primer. Let the first coat dry for four to six hours, then apply a second coat if necessary.
