Repairing Stains & Crumbling on a White Block Cement Wall

Keeping a white concrete block wall looking new and pristine involves removing stains as soon as they occur and patching any nicks in the concrete surface. Very old concrete that is in poor shape will begin to crumble. Repairing some nicks and chips as a result of the crumbing is possible, but the crumbling will continue until you decide to replace the cement block wall. Repairing crumbing is only a temporary solution.

Instructions

  1. Removing Stains

    • 1

Lay a drop cloth on the floor to catch water that would otherwise damage your carpet or wood floor.

    • 2

Fill a bucket with hot water and add 2 tablespoons liquid dish soap. Mix until the water is sudsy.

    • 3

Dip a scrub brush into the soapy water. Scrub the concrete stain with the brush until the stain is gone. This solution is effective in removing most stains, but it may not be enough to remove all stains.

    • 4

Soak a clean cloth in clear water and rub it over the concrete blocks. This will rinse away most of the soapy solution.

    • 5

Sprinkle a wet scrubbing brush with unsweetened lemonade powder while the wall is still wet. Skip this step if you’ve already removed the stain.

    • 6

Scrub the brush over the stain if you can still see it. The acid in the powder will help remove any alkaline stains.

    • 7

Rinse the wall by rubbing it with a cloth soaked in water. Repeat the process until the wall is completely rinsed.

    Repairing Crumbing

    • 8

Lay a drop cloth over the floor to protect it.

    • 9

Fill a bucket with hot water and add 2 tablespoons liquid dish soap. Mix until the water is sudsy. Use the cleaning solution to scrub the pitted area. Rinse the wall with a cloth soaked in water. Let it dry completely.

    • 10

Cut the tip off a tube of concrete repair caulk. The hole should be at least ¼ inch wide but not more than 3/8 inch wide. Place the caulking tube into a caulk gun.

    • 11

Push caulk out of the tube and into the pits and crumbing portion of the concrete wall.

    • 12

Slide a putty knife over the area to smooth it out. Let the concrete dry completely.

    • 13

Repeat the process with the rest of the pitted and crumbing areas.
