How to Repair a Hole in the Drywall From a Door Knob in an Apartment

It isn't hard to put a hole in drywall -- and it's especially simple to do with a doorknob. If this damage was in a home you owned, you might ignore the hole and deal with it later. However, if the doorknob created a hole in a rental property, the need to repair the hole becomes more immediate. The last thing you want is to lose part of your security deposit because of a hole in the wall. Fortunately, as easy as it was to make the hole, it's almost as simple to repair it.

Things You'll Need

  • Self-adhesive drywall mesh tape

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any portions of drywall that are sticking out from the hole using the utility knife.

    • 2

Sand the area around the hole with medium grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Apply a piece of self-adhesive drywall mesh joint tape over the hole. If one piece isn't quite wide enough, overlap two pieces of tape so the hole is covered completely.

    • 4

Spread spackle over the mesh joint tape using the small putty knife. Cover the tape and fill in the holes in the mesh.

    • 5

Use the large putty knife to remove any excess spackle.

    • 6

Allow the spackle to dry. The spackle is dry when it no longer looks shiny or wet.

    • 7

Sand the spackled area with medium-grit sandpaper until the area is smooth and flush with the surrounding wall.

    • 8

Apply primer with a paintbrush or roller. Allow to dry.

    • 9

Paint the area with paint matching the surrounding wall.
