How to Install Childproof Gates on Plaster Walls

Plaster creates an incredibly hard surface and trying to mount something on this type of wall is frustrating. Childproof gates that need in-wall installation typically won't have kits that are right for this job. Even pressure-held gates may slip off the surface of the plaster. For safety, wood boards are hung on the plaster first to give you a good foundation to either mount a regular gate or give a pressure-held gate a better gripping surface.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 wood boards
  • Handsaw
  • Drill
  • Masonry bit
  • Masonry screws
  • Cordless screwdriver (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two wood boards with a handsaw to fit the childproof gate. The boards should extend a few inches above the top of the gate.

    • 2

Drill two holes in each side of the wall, using a drill equipped with a masonry bit. Size the bit slightly smaller than the screws you'll be using. Each hole should be located so you can attach the board through the top and bottom of the wood.

    • 3

Insert two screws into each board until the ends are visible through the board. This will make inserting the screws into the wall easier.

    • 4

Line up the board and screws and tighten the rest of the way. The heads of the screw need to be flush with the board. Repeat with the second board on the other side of the wall.

    • 5

Adjust the childproof gate between the boards. If it's a pressure gate, shorten or lengthen the arms as necessary until the fit is snug. If it's a permanent gate, attach the brackets to the wood boards, using the cordless screwdriver.
