How to Grind Basement Wall Seams

Basements are often constructed of cement blocks for the added structural support and because of high moisture levels underground. The blocks are constructed using mortar that dries to a rock hard finish. If you did not scrape the joints smooth during construction, the mortar creates unattractive seams that are bumpy and extend out from the wall. The only way to remove these excess mortar deposits is by using a hand-held concrete grinder tool.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the basement area by opening widows to provide extra ventilation. Close all doors that lead to other parts of the home, and hang long plastic tarps over them, secured using painter’s tape.

    • 2

Wear safety glasses, ear protection and a dust mask, and plug in the cord of the concrete grinder. Turn on the grinder power button and place it against one of the wall seams you want to smooth down. Position the grinding wheel perpendicular to the wall, then turn it down at approximately a 45 degree angle.

    • 3

Maintain the angle on the grinder and move it down along the wall seam to grind off the rough spots. Use a slow, steady motion until you reach the bottom of the wall.

    • 4

Examine the seam to determine if it is smooth enough. If needed, repeat the process to grind the seam again.

    • 5

Continue grinding all of the remaining wall seams in the same manner until they are all smooth.

    • 6

Remove the tarps and painter's tape from the area and throw them away. Vacuum the interior of the basement thoroughly using a wet-dry vacuum to remove all of the sanding dust.
