How to Insulate an Already Drywalled Wall

Insulation inside a home’s walls will save the homeowner money and keep a room at an even temperature. While most insulation is added before drywall is installed, you can still insulate a wall afterward. The trick is to use spray cellulose and a cellulose spraying machine to fill in all the nooks and crannies without removing all of your drywall. Cellulose spraying machines can be rented at most home repair stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Run the stud finder across the wall. Mark each stud with a pencil as the stud finder beeps.

    • 2

Set up your ladder between the first two studs. Saw a 2- to 3-inch hole at the top of the wall with a hole saw.

    • 3

Place the cellulose hose into the hole in the wall and have a friend turn it on. Make sure you are wearing a mask and eye protection whenever you are using the machine.

    • 4

Pull the hose out as the wall fills up. Have your friend turn the machine off once you are feeling resistance within the wall or you cannot fit any more insulation inside.

    • 5

Repeat with each wall space between the studs.

    • 6

Remove the hose and place the circle back in place on the wall. Patch with putty and paint over the holes when you are done.
