How to Redo the Walls in a Double Wide

The walls in most double wides have the same ho-hum look that includes vertical molding running along the walls or -- on older models -- wood paneling. If you redo a double wide's walls by removing the vertical molding and properly paint over the paneling, you will give your mobile home a fresh appearance. Before you begin the transformation, remove all the items from the room and cover the floor with drop cloths to protect the surface from paint splatters.

  • Hammer
  • Joint compound

Instructions

    • 1

Pop the vertical molding running along the double wide's walls with the back of a hammer.

    • 2

Scoop a dollop of joint compound out of the container with a putty knife. Cover the gap where the vertical molding was with the joint compound.

    • 3

Smooth the compound out as evenly as possible with the putty knife. Continue applying the joint compound and smoothing with the putty knife until you have filled the entire gap with the compound.

    • 4

Let the joint repair compound dry for several hours. Sand the dried repair compound with a fine piece of sandpaper until compound is completely smooth and flush with the surrounding wall. Wipe the walls clean with a damp cloth and let dry.

    • 5

Pour primer in a paint tray. Roll a paint roller in the paint tray until it is covered in primer. Hold the paint roller above the tray to let the excessive primer drip from the roller and into the tray.

    • 6

Apply the primer to the entire wall with the paint roller. Continue in this manner until all the walls are covered in primer. Let the surface dry for several hours.

    • 7

Stir the paint vigorously with a wooden paint stirrer. Pour the stirred paint in a clean paint tray. Roll a clean paint roller in the paint tray until it is covered with the paint.

    • 8

Roll the paint over the entire surface until the wall is covered with the paint. Continue in this manner until you painted all the walls. Let the walls dry for several hours. Add a second coat of paint to the walls if needed.
