How to Cover a Brick Wall With Plaster Sheets

Old homes with brick walls often need updating. The brick can become worn and unappealing -- or maybe you want a more modern decor. You can update your home using several methods, including covering the brick with plaster sheets, also called plasterboard. This is a method of drywalling over the brick and allows you to paint or wallpaper the drywall as you would any other wall. This new wall covering gives you nearly limitless decor possibilities for a fraction the cost of removing or repairing the brick.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the brick wall with a measuring tape. Cut the plasterboard to fit the wall. Use as many large, solid sheets as possible, compared to cutting smaller pieces and patching them together. Cut the board with a sharp box cutter. Snap the board along the cut line after you have cut 2/3 of the way through.

    • 2

Scoop plasterboard adhesive out of the container using a putty knife and smear it in 1-foot increments around the back of the plasterboard. Use small balls of adhesive that are about 1 to 2 inches wide. Keep the adhesive at least 6 inches from the edge of the board so it doesn't ooze out the sides. Plasterboard comes in various sizes so the cuts will depend on the board you are using and the wall size.

    • 3

Place six balls of cornice cement on the back of the plasterboard so that they are equally spaced. Use the cornice cement to hold the plasterboard as the adhesive dries and cures.

    • 4

Press the plasterboard in the desired location. Have someone assist you if necessary. Level the plasterboard.

    • 5

Drive masonry nails, such as mickey pins, through the plasterboard and into the brick wall. Tack the nails into the masonry joints but leave part of the nail head sticking out so you can remove them later.

    • 6

Allow the plasterboard adhesive to set for at least two hours, or according to package instructions.

    • 7

Pound the masonry nails into the plasterboard so they are beneath the plasterboard's surface. Alternatively, pull the nails out.
