How to Fix Jagged Sheetrock

Jagged Sheetrock can stop a renovation project in its tracks. Sheetrock, a trademarked brand of drywall, has a chalky material make-up that will often leave behind rough and uneven edges after the material has been cut. These edges can be sharp and unsightly if left untouched. Smooth rugged edges to finish your project with a safer and cleaner product.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Lay the cloth over the floor of your working area. This will collect the Sheetrock dust for easier clean-up.

    • 2

Lay the Sheetrock carefully onto the cloth so the jagged edge is facing you and the cloth extends out at least 2 feet past the edge on which you will be working. For larger pieces of Sheetrock, get someone to help you with this step. If you drop the Sheetrock you could break it and injure yourself. Wear work gloves for a better grip.

    • 3

Prop up the Sheetrock so you can access the jagged side of the Sheetrock. Use buckets with rubber bases or other items that will not slip. Use at least one propping item for each side of the sheet.

    • 4

Wet the rag and wipe it along the jagged edge of the Sheetrock to remove excess dirt and provide a firmer work surface.

    Smoothing

    • 5

Remove any large chunks of jagged Sheetrock with the drywall knife, if applicable, and dispose of the pieces immediately to free-up work space.

    • 6

Rub the file up and down the jagged side of the Sheetrock. Use both hands and a steady motion to ensure you are filing evenly. Repeat as needed until the edge is mostly smooth.

    • 7

Use the sandpaper to remove any remaining rough patches. Fold large pieces of sandpaper in half to avoid the paper wrapping around and sanding the other sides of the Sheetrock.

    • 8

Wet the rag and wipe it along the finished edge of the Sheetrock to remove excess dirt.
