Use Quikwall to Build Retaining Walls

Quickwall, a surface-bonding cement, makes an attractive finishing material that gives an appealing look to otherwise stark concrete walls. You can build an attractive retaining wall using this product. Quickwall also blends well with certain liquids pigments, providing a variety of color options.
  1. Preparation

    • The concrete blocks should rest on the footing, a concrete foundation that lies in a trench. The footing must cure, or harden, before it's ready to support the blocks. Once it has cured, place your blocks on the footing and set up a string line to check them for level. Then remove the blocks and apply a 1-inch layer of Quickwall on the footing. You set the first course on top of this layer.

    Alignment

    • You must maintain proper alignment as you proceed with the higher courses. Checking the alignment and level of the row every fourth block should keep your courses straight. When you start the second row, use a half-block rather than a full block. Using a half-block creates the "running bond" pattern and leads to the joints being staggered rather than lining up. An alignment of the wall's vertical joints might weaken its structure.

    Finish Rows

    • After using Quickwall to embed the first row, you do not need to use it to anchor subsequent rows. The higher courses may simply be placed dry on the wall. The retaining wall should be no higher than 6 to 8 feet when using this method. When you have completed the rows, use cap blocks, a special type of concrete block, to add a decorative finish that covers the top row.

    Cover Walls

    • To complete the retaining wall, cover the blocks with the Quickwall product. For best results, spray the wall with water before applying. Cover both sides as well as the ends of the wall with a 1/8-inch layer of the substance. Spreading the material with a trowel can give you the desired texture or finish. Keep the wall moist by spraying it with water for 8 hours after applying the Quickwall. Continue spraying a few times a day for 3 days.
