What to Do With Weeping Moisture on Wall?

In humid and rainy conditions, moisture will find its way onto or through any surface. Cracks and holes are obvious entry points, but sometimes it's just a result of materials used in construction, particularly cement blocks or mortared joints. Basement walls are notorious for hosting weeping walls, but significant weather events occasionally create ground-level problems, too. Commercial products, changes in room conditions and outdoor construction all can help reduce moisture on interior walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint or seal the wall, particularly if it is stone or concrete. Roll-on products specifically for filling small cracks or holes in the wall's surface are sold at all home-improvement warehouses and will keep moisture from penetrating.

    • 2

Purchase a dehumidifier. This fan-based appliance removes moisture through air movement and deposits water in a reservoir to be discarded. A dehumidifier is effective in a small space, but it may need to be left running constantly when it is raining or very humid to maintain proper room conditions.

    • 3

Improve the air circulation. Open heating and cooling registers, doors and windows to prevent stagnant conditions. Plugging in a regular fan also will help circulate air around the room.

    • 4

Install gutters or a perimeter drain. Both options channel rainwater away from areas sensitive to moisture problems. Gutters are attached to roof lines, while a perimeter drain pipe is an in-ground option. The drain also gives you the opportunity to angle the level of the ground away from the basement with follow-up landscaping.
