What Is the Easiest Way to Remove a Bubble From a Dried Piece of Drywall Joint Tape?

Drywall tape consists of either paper or fiberglass mesh and seals the seams between two pieces of drywall. Installers then apply joint compound over the tape to disguise the seams completely. However, if the tape was applied incorrectly, bubbles form under it that push out and create bulges in the wall or ceiling. The easiest and best way to repair drywall tape bubbles is to reattach the bubbled area to the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a plastic tarp under the area of the wall or ceiling where the bubbled tape is located. This catches the dust and tape pieces, thus making cleanup easier.

    • 2

Examine the bubbled area of drywall tape to locate the extent of the damage. Cut open the center of the bubble by making a slit at least 1 inch long.

    • 3

Open a tub of joint compound and use a small hand trowel to scoop up 1/2 to 1 teaspoon using the tip. Insert a knife blade into the slit and hold it up while you use the trowel tip to insert the joint compound under it. Then remove the trowel and the knife from the slit.

    • 4

Repeat the process to apply additional joint compound under the opposite side of the slit. Then press down on top of the slit using a seam roller or another flat, dull object to press out the excess joint compound and to smooth the bubble. Scrape off the excess compound using the putty knife. Wait two to three hours to allow the joint compound to dry.

    • 5

Apply another 1/8-inch-thick layer of compound over the entire repair site. Wait another two to three hours until it dries.

    • 6

Apply a final 1/8-inch-thick coat of joint compound to the repair site and wait for it to dry.

    • 7

Sand the entire repair site using a piece of fine-grit sandpaper until the joint compound blends in with the drywall.

    • 8

Wipe the area with a cloth to remove the sanding dust and then roll up the plastic tarp and throw it away.
