How to Level Uneven Walls

Years of moisture, dents and repainting can lead to uneven walls. The elements work against each other, revealing unsightly cracks and bubbles on what was once a smooth surface. A fresh layer of paint hides the uneven layers temporarily, but the problems often return with time. Prep work is required for a long-lasting solution to fix uneven walls. With the right tools, you can get your walls back into shape for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any obstructions, such as furniture and fixtures, from the wall you want to level. Protect the floor with dust sheets.

    • 2

Sand down any rough edges and dents on the wall thoroughly. Scrape off the paint using vertical (up and down) movement. If the paint is difficult to remove, apply a paint remover or varnish to the surface to loosen the paint before scraping it off.

    • 3

Apply a thin coat of premixed drywall compound to dents or holes. Distribute the compound evenly with a putty knife.

    • 4

Allow the compound to dry, following the manufacturer's instructions for timing.

    • 5

Re-sand the uneven area until it's completely level.

    • 6

Wipe away any dust or stains with a tack cloth.

    • 7

Dip a paint roller into paint and roll it onto the area you're leveling. Use vertical strokes and paint in the same direction over the area.
