How to Remove Orange Peel Texture From Drywall for a Wainscoting Effect

Drywall is often textured in an orange-peel effect. This texture is usually applied before the wall is painted, and joint compound is used to create the effect. You can smooth out the texturing on the lower part of the wall to create a natural wainscoting effect, which can be highlighted with a simple piece of molding. The key to this project is how you scrape the wall: If you damage the drywall underneath the texture, you may have to replace it.

  • Dropcloths
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Masking or painter's tape

Instructions

    • 1

Lay dropcloths beneath the wall. Push away furniture to give yourself enough room to work and remove any outlet covers on the wall. Place the covers and screws in a safe place where they won’t be broken or lost.

    • 2

Measure up from the floor to mark the break in the texturing pattern. Wainscoting is typically 4 feet high. Tape a horizontal line down the wall to follow as you work. Use a level or make several measurements along the wall to be sure the tape is even before you begin. Small mistakes may be hidden under molding but do your best to keep the line straight.

    • 3

Mix the TSP cleaner and warm water in a bucket. Use 10 parts water to 1 part TSP or follow the package instructions. Put on latex gloves to protect your skin and goggles to protect your eyes. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in the work space.

    • 4

Sponge the cleaning mixture onto the wall but do not saturate the wall. Let it soak in for five to 10 minutes.

    • 5

Begin carefully scraping the texture off the wall. The TSP cleaner loosens the bond between the texture and the drywall and should start to break down any paint layers. Do not scrape too hard or gouge at the drywall. This is a lengthy process that involves removing a thin layer at a time and may require several applications of TSP.

Wipe down the wall again. If stubborn spots remain, use more of the TSP mixture to loosen it and scrape the spot again. Continue until the area of wall is no longer textured.
