How to Cut Angles for a Crown Mold Repair for Drywall Holes

Crown molding mounted on drywall can cover damage to the wall, but if the molding itself is damaged, cutting a replacement piece to fit the damaged area can be difficult. For a seamless fit, it is important that you cut the replacement molding to the correct angle to fit into the existing molding. This requires careful measurement and setting of the angle bar on the miter saw, to ensure removal of the right amount of coving.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 12-inch long piece of scrap wood the same width and thickness as the crown molding you intend to use to repair the crown mold hole on your drywall. Alternatively, cut a 12-inch long piece off the replacement crown molding you will use to fix the hole. This is your sample piece, to use to find the correct angle to cut.

Cut a vertical line down the crown molding on the wall with a hacksaw, 1 inch from either end of the hole in the crown molding. Remove the damaged molding. If the angle that was cut on the molding is intact, use this as a template to mark the correct angle to cut on the sample piece. Cut the sample piece at the marked angle using a miter saw.

Hold the sample piece in the hole, to check the angle. Remove the sample piece from the drywall. If the angle was too sharp, cut the sample piece at a slightly larger angle, using the miter saw. Hold the sample piece in the hole once more to check the angle. Continue to cut the sample piece until the correct angle is found to fit the crown mold properly.

Stand the sample piece on top of the replacement crown molding. Mark on the replacement molding the angle the sample piece is cut using a pencil. Measure the size of the hole to be filled using a tape measure. Cut the replacement molding to this length using the miter saw. Cut the marked angle on the replacement piece with the miter saw.
