How to Get Glue Behind a Panel

Wood wall paneling is often attached to drywall, beams, supports or studs with adhesive. Over time, due to exposure to heat or moisture, the adhesive can fail and cause the paneling to pull away from the wall beneath. It isn’t necessary to completely dismantle the paneling to repair this bowing. Use the proper tools and techniques to inexpensively and quickly apply replacement adhesive behind the existing wall paneling.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the remaining adhesive behind the wood panel with a blow dryer. Hold the blow dryer approximately 4 to 6 inches away from the affected panel and run it back and forth to loosen the remaining glue. This allows you to safely pull the paneling away without any damage.

    • 2

Pull the paneling away from the wall carefully. If only a small portion of the paneling is dislodged, there is no need to completely remove it from the wall. Holding the paneling away from the wall with one hand, carefully scrape away the remaining dried adhesive from the paneling’s back and the wall beneath with a putty knife.

    • 3

Apply a replacement layer of adhesive to the wall behind the paneling with a paintbrush. Wear a dust mask and work gloves while spreading the adhesive to prevent inhaling the fumes or cutting your hands.

    • 4

Allow the adhesive to sit and become tacky for two to three minutes before pressing the paneling against the wall. Run your hand along the wall to remove any air bubbles.
