Chimney Lining Techniques

Whether you are replacing an existing liner or installing one for the first time, there are a variety of options available to you. From clay to metal liners, there is a style and material to fit every need and price range.
  1. Clay Tile

    • Clay liners are the most common type chimney liner. They are widely available and cheap. They are also the liner of choice for most new chimney construction. Clay does not quickly absorb and evenly distribute heat during a rapid temperature change such as a chimney fire. It simply cracks or shatters and helps to prevent the fire from spreading.

    Stainless Steel

    • Stainless steel chimney liners are used mainly for wood stoves and wood furnaces. They are available in either flexible or rigid form. Stainless steel liners also come in various shapes, such as oval, round, rectangular and square. A downside to stainless steel is that it does conduct heat rapidly and does not provide any prevention against fire.

    Cast-In-Place

    • Cast-in-place liners can be used in all types of chimneys. Liners consist of a mixture of volcanic rock and cement. A rubber form is placed inside the chimney and the cement mixture is then poured into the form and allowed to harden. This type of liner can repair old and fire damaged chimneys. It is a permanent repair solution.
