Can HVAC Filters Be Recycled?

HVAC filters are used in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning units and systems. The purpose of the filter is to protect the unit. In some cases it can also help improve the air quality of the environment it is working in. Recycling HVAC filters can help save you money while being environmentally safe.
  1. Are They Recyclable

    • HVAC filters are recyclable. In recycling, they are clleaned thoroughly to remove any dirt and debris that may be clogged in the filter media - the beehive-like matrix that holds the filter material. The filter media must not be damaged. Then the filter is run through a wet process that uses a cleaner to remove the dust and oil from the filter. A recycled filter that 98 percent clean costs 30 percent to 40 percent less than a brand new filter.

    Alternative

    • While HVAC filter recycling is viable, you may have trouble finding a place that does it and where you may dispose of your old HVAC filter. You may want to talk to your supplier to see if they offer a recycling program and accept old filters.

An alternative to having your filters recycled is to buy a washable HVAC filter. These are sometimes called permanent filters; they are removable and washable at your home, which cut costs down considerable. They also claim to be just as effective in removing dust, bacteria and fungal spores from the air environment, although some believe this claim too good to be true and that general washing is not strong enough to eliminate fungal and bacterial growth.
