How to Install a Vent for a Nutone Range Hood

Installing a horizontal discharge, 3¼-inch-by-10-inch vent system for a Nutone range hood will move cooking odors, moisture, and smoke to the outdoors. Range hoods installed on an outside wall eliminate the need to route the vent through the roof, reducing potential leaks and periodic maintenance to the vented assembly. The Nutone NS6500 range hood is configured so the vent can be routed directly through the wall behind it. This also eliminates the need to cut holes in the cabinet it is mounted to.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a 6-inch vertical reference line on the wall just below the cabinet the range hood will be mounted to. Use the level to make this line plumb with the centerline of the cabinet.

    • 2

Measure 3 7/8 inches down from the bottom of the cabinet frame and make a mark on the reference line drawn in Step 1. When the cabinet bottom is recessed, measure from the bottom of the cabinet frame, and not the bottom of the cabinet.

    • 3

Measure 5¼ inches to the left and right of the mark made in Step 2, and mark these locations.

    • 4

Draw a level, horizontal line connecting the two marks made in Step 3.

    • 5

Draw two plumb, vertical lines upward to the cabinet frame from the ends of the line drawn in Step 4. This rectangular area is where the throat of the hooded wall vent will go through the wall.

    • 6

Remove the drywall or other wall covering within the rectangle drawn on the wall. Remove insulation behind the opening.

    • 7

Drill one hole at each corner of the rectangle through the exterior wall material.

    • 8

Draw lines on the exterior side of the wall connecting the four holes drilled in Step 7.

    • 9

Cut out the rectangle drawn in Step 8. Apply a bead of silicone sealant all around the mounting flange of the hooded vent.

    • 10

Slide the vent throat through the wall and fasten the hood in place on the exterior surface of the wall using the galvanized screws through the holes in the hooded vent flange.

    • 11

Install the provided transition on the back of the vent. Make sure the damper works freely.

    • 12

Feed electrical power wire through the knockout in the back of the unit while lifting and sliding the range vent into place under the cabinet. Make sure vent transition slides completely into the throat of the hooded wall vent.

    • 13

Fasten the Nutone range vent to the cabinet using the supplied screws at the pre-drilled locations on the top of the hood.
