How to Install Rooftop Dryer Vents

Clothes dryers work by using a small blower to force hot air over your tumbling clothes. This hot air collects lint and moisture from your clothes and forces it through an outlet vent on the back of your dryer, through a duct, and outside your home. Installing a duct to remove the moisture and lint from your duct is a fairly simple do-it-yourself project, but it must be done properly -- if it's not, it could constitute a fire hazard.

Things You'll Need

  • Galvanized steel duct
  • Galvanized elbow joints
  • Exterior vent cap
  • Ladder
  • Drill
  • 4 1/4-inch hole saw
  • Caulk
  • Foil duct tape
  • Level

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where you'll put your dryer and run the dryer vent. Try to place the dryer on an exterior wall and minimize the length and amount of curves in the duct work as much as possible.

    • 2

Mark the spot where your dryer will be installed, as well as the route for the duct work (this includes marking any holes to drill through the ceiling, as well as on the roof). Measure the route of the duct from the outlet on the dryer through to the roof so you can buy the length of duct you need.

    • 3

Buy your supplies. You'll need enough straight duct to lead from the dryer to the roof, as well as elbow joints for any turns, and a cap for the vent on the roof. Use either galvanized steel or aluminum ducts.

    • 4

Go onto your roof and drill a pilot hole through to the attic to make sure that you have the roof marked in the proper spot. Go back into the attic to make sure the hole is in the right spot. If it's not, plug the hole you drilled, re-measure and mark a new spot, and drill another pilot hole.

    • 5

Go back onto the roof and use a 4 1/4-inch hole saw to drill the opening through the roof. Install the vent cover over the roof, attaching it with the provided screws. Caulk around the edge of the vent cover to prevent leaks. Return to the attic.

    • 6

Install the duct work following the plan you devised. Start with attaching the duct work to the vent, and work your way down to the outlet on the dryer. Wrap foil duct tape around the joints to seal them and strengthen the duct.

    • 7

Place an elbow joint over the outlet on the back of the dryer, and attach the duct leading up to the roof to the other end of the elbow. Slide the dryer into place, and use a level to make sure that the duct is level. Wrap foil duct tape around the joint to seal it.
