How to Install a Deflecto Dryer Vent Cover

Deflect-o makes a louvered vent cover that permits dryer exhaust to flow straight outward. When the dryer is not running, the louvers are closed and they prevent air, rain, snow, birds and rodents from getting into the vent pipe. The vent cover comes attached to an 11-inch length of 4-inch diameter aluminum pipe that can be installed on an exterior wall. One end of a spiral-wound, flexible aluminum hose is connected to the dryer and its other end is connected to the aluminum pipe of the vent cover.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the studs in the wall in the area where the dryer vent will be installed.

    • 2

Draw a 4 ¼ inch diameter circle on the wall in a place where there will be no studs behind it. Try to keep the bottom of the circle no more than three inches above the finished floor.

    • 3

Drill a ¼ inch diameter pilot hole through the wall at the center of the 4 ¼ inch circle marked out in step two. Use a drill bit long enough to go all the way through the wall and come out on the outside. Keep the drill level while drilling, and minimize up-and-down, and side-to-side movement.

    • 4

Draw a 4 ¼ inch diameter circle on the exterior side of the wall using the pilot hole drilled in step three as the center of the circle.

    • 5

Enlarge the pilot hole enough so the blade of the jig saw will fit into it. Cut outward from the pilot hole until meeting the marked circle and then continue to cut it out.

    • 6

Cut out the 4 ¼ inch diameter hole in the interior wall using the same process to cut out the circle as in step five.

    • 7

Push insulation to the sides so the hole is unobstructed.

    • 8

Slide the aluminum pipe of the vent cover through the wall from the outside of the building.

    • 9

Apply a bead of silicone caulk to the backside of the vent cover.

    • 10

Attach the vent cover to the exterior side of the wall by driving a screw at each corner.

    • 11

Slide the supplied collar over the aluminum pipe until it contacts the surface of the interior wall.

    • 12

Squeeze the tabs on the expandable clamp on one end of the flexible aluminum hose, slide the hose over the vent cover aluminum pipe and release the clamp tabs allowing the clamp to tighten around the aluminum hose where it covers the aluminum pipe.

    • 13

Attach the other end of the aluminum hose to the dryer vent exhaust pipe using the other clamp.
