How to Repair a Home Dryer Vent

Taking proper care to secure the air flow of your dryer duct is important for safety concerns. If the air flow is allowed to escape, the room your dryer is in may become humid and fill the window sills with mold. If the dryer vent is cracked and cold air seeps through, condensation can create and form a leak. Patching your vent is required to prevent leaking water, humidity and possible odor problems.

Instructions

Turn off the dryer and wait until it has been cooled after a cycle, or about 30 minutes. Do not try to touch the vent pipe immediately after the dryer has been used. You may cause serious injury by burning your skin.

    • 2

Wipe the surface of the dryer vent, where the crack is, with the wet cloth to remove dust and debris. The adhesives on the tape will work best if the area is completely clean and smooth.

    • 3

Dry the area off with the dry cloth and double check all creases to be sure the dust and dirt are gone. Repeat with the wet cloth until all debris has been wiped away.

Cut the amount of heating and cooling duct tape you need to cover the hole. Place the tape onto the crack and press firmly until it adheres. Cut extra pieces of tape to cover the hole with 1/2 inch of clearance on all sides. Wait one hour before running the dryer again.
