Determine the location for the exhaust fan. The best spot is near the furnace, and mounted through the wood frame. Take a piece of metal exhaust tubing and hold it up to the wall where the vent is supposed to go. Trace the outline with a pencil so there is a good template for the outside of the vent.
Drill a series of holes for use with a saw at several points around the interior of the outline. Use a jigsaw, beginning in one hole and continuing on around the perimeter until there is a perfectly round cutout done.
Place the fan into the hole on the inside of the basement. Follow the fan’s installation instructions closely, and mount it to the wall with the included set screws.
Insert the vent piece into the hole on the outside of the house. Be sure that it is placed in such a way to keep insects and the elements from entering. Use the set screws to mount it securely to the wall. Place a thin bead of transparent caulk around the vent to seal it completely.
Run an electrical cable from the fan to a switch box mounted to a basement wall. Run a second cable from the switch box to the main circuit box. Connect the cable from the fan to one side of the switch, and the line to the circuit box to the other side of the switch. Use wire nuts and electrical tape to connect the fan to the electrical wire.
Turn off power to the main in the circuit box. Connect the new cable to the junction box, and cover any bare wire or connections with electrical tape.
