How to Install a House Ridge Vent

You can cut your cooling bill and help your shingles last longer by installing additional roof vents, including one called a ridge vent. A ridge vent takes the air from the highest point in the attic and exhausts it without any help from a fan or blower. These vents are adjustable and can work on various roof pitches. Years ago you only had metal vents to choose from. Now you also have plastic vents that you can cap with your regular shingles that you’ve pre-cut to match your existing shingles and you don’t have to worry about ugly dents.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old shingles that are covering the peak of the roof (cap shingles) by peeling them off in large pieces using a claw hammer to remove the nails, and a flat bar to help force off the shingles from the roofing cement adhesive.

    • 2

Read the instructions on the ridge vent packaging to get the approximate width of the roof opening (varies by vent chosen). Measure the distance from the roof peak to the bottom of where the opening will be once the cutting is done. Use a tape measure to perform this step on both sides of the roof’s peak and on both ends where the vent will go. Snap a chalk line to mark where you will be cutting.

    • 3

Cut through the shingles and then the sheathing to cut out the ridge opening you marked using a circular saw. Be careful not to cut into critical framing such as the rafter tops. Stop the cuts at least 12 inches away from each end of the gable, chimney, or hip roof and then use a chisel to remove the remaining 12 inches of shingles and sheathing.

    • 4

Cut the ridge vent sections to the appropriate length using a circular saw if using plastic, or tin snips if using metal. Run the vents one section at a time to the end of the ridge by placing a vent with baffled material intact over each part of the peak. Secure with roofing nails. Place the vents vertically against the surface for obstruction areas (chimneys, gable end, hip roof) and seal in with polyurethane sealant. Cover all joints with flashing.

Coat the underbelly side of the new cap shingles you purchased or the pre-cut cap shingles you made from standard shingles with roofing cement. Then install in double layers starting at the end of the roof that is facing away from strong wind.
