How to Install an Under Cabinet Range Hood

One of the most-needed items in your kitchen is an under-cabinet range hood fitted over your stove that exhausts grease, oil, odor and smoke outside of your home. A range hood can help keep these things from building up on your kitchen cabinets and other places within the home. Steam can also build up in the kitchen and cause excessive heat in other areas.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the stove hood on the floor upside down so that you can remove the bottom cover, filter and metal duct-connector-damper using a socket wrench or screwdriver. Find the knockout on your hood (normally located at the top of unit) that fits into your exhaust ventilation plans of exhausting up through the cabinet above the range and out a sidewall. Punch out the knockout with a screwdriver and hammer.

    • 2

Screw on the duct-connector-damper to the back of range hood. Place the range hood on the wall above the range. Check to make sure that the range is level by using a leveler. Trace the knockout opening on the wall with a marker. Place the hood back on the floor. Turn the power off at the circuit breaker in the utility room or basement. Drill a starter hole in the outline you made and cut the interior wall away with a drywall saw.

    • 3

Fit your power drill with an extension shaft and 3/8-inch masonry bit. Drill four holes through the exterior wall using the four corners of the knockout opening you made on the interior wall as the guideline. Now go outside and use your reciprocating saw to cut from hole to hole until the cut is complete on the exterior wall.

    • 4

Attach the range hood under the cabinet above the stove using the pre-drilled holes in the hood and the screws provided. Connect the white wire on the hood to the white wire on the wall or under the cabinet, black wire from the hood to the black wire on the wall or under the cabinet, and green wire on the wall or under the cabinet to the green wire on hood and to ground screw. Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker and test the range hood.

Apply some silicone caulk around the wall cap’s underside. Slide the wall cap’s end through the opening you made on the wall until it reaches the inside of the interior wall. Connect the duct-connector-damper to the range hood. Tighten down on the clamp to secure in place or apply duct tape. Attach the wall cap to the side of the house. Replace the range hood’s cover and filter.
