Installation of Wall-Mounted Bathroom Exhaust Fans

Bathrooms need proper ventilation to remove moisture and prevent mold and mildew. Installing a wall-mounted exhaust fan in a bathroom can remove wetness and odors. Make sure you don't cut into a wall joist, which could compromise the stability of the wall, and check the area around the exterior of the wall, to make sure there are no trees, bushes or other obstructions.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a circle on the interior side of the wall the same circumference as the fan duct of the exhaust fan, use the template included with the fan, if available. If there is no template, hold the fan against the wall and trace around the perimeter with a pencil.

    • 2

Cut out the circle in the interior wall with a course saw if the wall is drywall. If the wall is plaster, poke small holes all around the pencil circle with a drill, then cut along the circle with a jig saw.

    • 3

Position the fan inside the hole. Reach inside the fan and trace around the opening of the fan on the outer wall with a pencil. Or, lay the fan on a piece of paper and trace around it to make a template. Cut out the template, place it on the inside of the outer wall, and trace around it with a pencil.

    • 4

Hold the fan in place against the wall and mark the screw holes of the fan onto the wall with a pencil or sharp object.

    • 5

Drill all the screw holes with an electric drill. Insert toggle fasteners inside the screw holes.

    • 6

Drill four holes in the circle you drew in Step 3 to use for aligning the exterior housing on the outside of the exterior wall. Drill the four alignment holes at the top, bottom, left and right points on the circle.

    • 7

Walk outside to the exterior wall where the fan will blow out. Line up a template of the exterior housing of your fan with the four alignment holes. Trace around the template to draw the shape of the exterior housing on the outside wall.

    • 8

Cut a hole in the exterior wall for the exterior fan housing. Drill holes with an electric drill to start your cut. Cut out the hole with a saw suited for cutting the exterior wall of your home. Install and screw in the exterior fan housing.

    • 9

Go back inside your bathroom and put the fan into the hole you cut in the bathroom wall.

    • 10

Turn off electricity. Connect fan to electrical supply according to the directions supplied with fan. Plug in fan and turn electricity back on. Turn on the fan and test if it's working.

    • 11

Turn off electricity again. Install the grill or front piece of fan, using the connectors supplied with fan.
