How to Install Solar Roof Vents

Solar-powered roof vents can offer an environmentally friendly and economical solution to summertime cooling problems. During the summer, attic temperatures can climb well over 150 degrees Fahrenheit. By minimizing your attic temperatures, you can actually reduce your power bills, while making your home more comfortable. Solar-powered exhaust vents have fans typically rated to move between 800 and 1,200 cubic feet per of air. The solar vents are powered by small 10- to 20-watt solar panels attached directly to the top of the vent housing, or on separate mounting feet for locating away from the vent where exposure to sunlight is better.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your solar vent in a south-facing position that will not be shaded by trees. In your attic, mark the location of your solar vent, using a pencil. Measure 2 to 3 feet down from the center ridge cap with a measuring tape, and make a center mark between two roof rafters. Drill a hole at this mark through the roof, so that the 1/4-inch drill bit extends above the shingles.

    • 2

Scribe a circle around the drill bit, using chalk or crayon and a string with a small loop tied at one end as a compass. The opening for the vent will typically be 12 inches to 14 inches in diameter; follow the vent manufacturer's directions.

    • 3

Cut the shingles along the circular outline, using a sharp utility knife. The vent will be surrounded by a flat metal flashing that will fit under the shingles surrounding the vent opening. Remove the nails or staples holding the shingles with a pry bar so that they can be carefully peeled back, and the flashing can slip underneath. Double-check the required diameter for the vent opening, and that your saw line will not cut through any roof rafters.

    • 4

Drill a starter hole if necessary, and cut the vent opening in the roof, using a reciprocating saw or saber saw.

    • 5

Lay a continuous bead of clear silicone sealant around the outline of the vent flashing, using a caulking gun. Set the roof vent over the silicone and press into place. Press the shingles back into place, attach with new roofing nails and a hammer, and caulk around the flashing. Screw the vent flashing to the roof, using the cordless drill, and finish with caulk over the screw heads to prevent leaks.
