How to Put Chemicals in Air Vent to Kill Mold

If your air vents are not installed, operated or maintained properly, they can become contaminated with particles of pollen, dust or other debris. If moisture is present from the air conditioner or heater, the potential for microbiological development or mold is increased and molding spores from the growth can be released into the air, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on its website. Using biocide chemicals can help kill mold in your vent. Note, however, that this approach is considered controversial because of the toxicity of these chemicals.

Contact a service to clean and spray your air vents. Services such as Sears Clean, CleanAir American, Super Air Duct Cleaning or Duct and Vent Cleaning of America are considered to be among the most reputable cleaning and biocide spraying services. Check their references and estimates, then schedule a service to clean and spray your vents. (See Reference 1 & Resources 1-4)

Allow the professionals to clean the vents. The air service provider will open access ports and doors to allow the entire system to be cleaned and inspected, protect the carpet and furniture with a plastic tarp, check for harmful materials in your heating and cooling systems, vacuum and scrub the inside of the air ducts and use a sealant to keep all of your vents free from outside particles.

Leave the spraying to the professionals. The professionals will use a biocide chemical that has the ability to kill living organisms in vents, agriculture and the human body. The professionals will apply the biocide into the vent with a garden-type sprayer. The application will be sprayed evenly throughout the duct system from at least 8 feet away, because spraying the biocide evenly is essential to the results.

Turn on the vent 30 minutes after the application process then leave your house. Go out for the day to let the biocide chemical settle in the vents. Leave your some of your windows open to air out the house. (See Reference 1 & 3)
