How to Clean Furnace Vents

The air vents in your home take the hot air from your furnace and give you heat. If you feel like the air in your home has become stuffy or your find yourself sneezing a lot, you may want to clean out the vents from your furnace. Many consumers believe that they need to employ a professional cleaning crew to clean their furnace vents. You can do the job with common tools found around the home.

      Use a tape measure to measure the length of the ducts on your furnace. This will come in handy when you need to determine the length of your whip cable and the diameter of your brushes.

      Start with the vents in your home. Use a tape measure to measure the length of the air vents in your home. Use a pair of scissors to cut plastic sheets big enough to cover the air vents in your home.

      Remove all of the vents from your home. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws holding the vents to the air ducts. Fill your sink with water and put the vents in to soak them.

      Cover the air vents with the plastic sheets and use tape to hold them in place. Determine the air vent that is closest to your furnace vent.

      Cut a hole in the plastic sheet of the vent closest to your furnace vent. Connect one of the vacuum attachments to the vacuum and then put it through the hole you cut.

      Connect the whip cable and the agitation brush to the hand drill and then slide it through the same hole. Turn on the vacuum cleaner and look to the other vents to see if they are being strained. If they are, then you have the right amount of suction.

      Pull the trigger on the drill to start the agitation brush. This will free all of the debris in your air vents to clean them out and bring the debris out of the furnace vents.
