How to Install Radon Fans in Attics

Radon is an invisible and odorless gas that has been shown to cause certain types of cancers. Radon is produced naturally under certain soil conditions and the gas can seep into basements and homes where it can become concentrated and potentially cause a health threat. If Radon gas is detected in your home then it is likely that a pipe will be run from the ground under your basement through your attic and out through you roof. In order to facilitate the flow of radon gas up through the pipe and into the atmosphere above your home, a fan is required to move the air. This fan is often installed in the attic of a home. In order for the fan to work properly, certain guidelines must be followed.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a fan specifically designed for pumping radon gas and is specifically designed to be mounted in an attic.

    • 2

Decide on the exact location for mounting the fan. The PVC pipe from the basement must enter the fan housing at the bottom of the fan and the pipe exit the housing at the top and continue up through the roof. Choose a spot where you can securely mount the fan to a stud or other piece of the house frame.

    • 3

Place rubber mounts between the fan housing and the portion of the frame to which the fan is being attached. The purpose of the rubber mounts is to reduce or completely eliminate any vibration or noise that the fan might cause. Secure the fan housing to the frame (with the rubber mounts between the fan housing and the frame) with the long screws or bolts, provided by the fan manufacturer.

    • 4

Wrap all exposed PVC pipe with a thick layer of insulation. Use insulation tape or electrical tape to hold the insulation tightly around the PVC. The purpose of the insulation is to prevent condensation from forming as the cold air from the basement meets the hot air of the attic.

    • 5

Follow all local ordinances as to the height of the exhaust pipe above the roof and keep it at least 10 feet from any window. Properly caulk and insulate all openings through which the PVC pipe travels.
