How do I Lubricate a Bryant Gas Furnace Blower Motor?

When problems surface with your Bryant gas furnace blower motor, motor lubrication may not be the only source of the problem. You may also hear strange noise when the motor belt is out of alignment or the pulleys are out of alignment. When you access the interior of the furnace to apply machine oil, you will also be able to reach the motor belt and pulleys. Remember to wear safety gloves when performing any home maintenance project.

Instructions

Turn off the power supply to the furnace and remove the furnace's access panel door. Use a damp cloth to wipe the motor clean. You can find the motor by looking for a large object within the access panel supplied by cords, usually located in the bottom of the access panel, depending on the model. Your Bryant gas furnace may also have a diagram of the furnace's interior on the access panel.

Remove the covers on the oil fill ports, which are located in the top section of the access panel's interior. Beneath the covers, the ports, which resemble tiny wheels, will be in the middle of a large wheel, supported by three slender brackets. Apply a few drops of light machine oil to the ports and replace the ports' covers.

Inspect the drive belt to ensure that problems with your Bryant gas furnace have been resolved. The belt is connected to the large wheel where the oil ports are located. Press down on the middle of the belt, which should flex about 1 inch. If the belt does not flex, go to the blower motor and loosen or tighten the pulley tension adjustment nut, which rests on the bottom of the blower motor. Press down on the belt again to test it and adjust as necessary.

Check the alignment of of the pulleys with a straightedge. Return to the motor and loosen the motor's mounting bolts. Gently move the motor until pulleys are aligned, and then tighten the mounting bolts again. Replace the furnace's access panels. Go to the main service panel and turn on the power supply to the furnace again.
