How do I Install Insulation Baffles Above the Exterior Wall to Protect the Insulation From Air?

Insulation baffles keep attic insulation from contacting the underside of the roof, and provide for a free flow of air from the soffit vents to the ridge vent. This prevents the buildup of condensation on the underside of the roof. Proper ventilation also keeps the roof cold during the winter, preventing ice dams from forming over the eaves. Insulation baffles are made of styrofoam or cardboard, and come sized to fit common rafter and truss spacing.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the existing insulation out of the way to expose the soffit vents.

    • 2

Fit the insulation baffle between the rafters or trusses, leaving a minimum one inch air space between the baffle and the roof sheathing. Be careful that the bottom end of the baffle does not block the soffit vent. Some insulation baffles are friction fit; if not, staple the baffles in place. Four to six staples should hold the baffle in place.

    • 3

Push the insulation back in place, being careful not to block the soffit vent.
