How to Prevent Mold in a Crawl Space

The crawl space--the small, unfinished area beneath the floors of a home that contains electrical wiring and other utilities--is susceptible to dampness and mildew, which can lead to mold that can spread through the air and eventually through your home. Instructions

    • 1

Check the crawl space for any cracks that might be allowing damp air in. Fill in cracks with cement or heavy-duty spackle. Ensure that the crawl space also has proper insulation.

    • 2

Cover any open soil in the crawl space with polyethylene plastic to seal the soil and prevent moisture from entering the crawl space from the ground.

    • 3

Put a dehumidifier with a dehumidistat included in the crawl space. A dehumidifier will remove any moisture that may seep into your crawl space; a dehumidistat will run the machine only when humidity and moisture are detected.

    • 4

Check your crawl space every week. If you notice a continuing dampness or moldy odor, consult a professional as there may be a problem with the construction of your crawl space.
