How to Clean Air Conditioner Coils With Bleach

Air conditioners are excellent places for dust and mold to accumulate. Because of this, it's important to keep them clean to avoid health issues and blockages. Cleaning your air conditioner regularly can lengthen its lifetime and help avoid technical issues.

  • Vacuum
  • Toilet brush or cleaning rag
  • Spray bottle
  • Bleach
  • Screwdriver (with both flat and phillips head)

      Make sure the air conditioner is unplugged or in the "off" position before you begin.

      Remove the panel to expose the coils. Some air conditioners will require a screwdriver for removal, while other panels may slide or pull out with no tools necessary. Most in-window systems will not require tools for removal.

      Remove any excess dirt or grime by vacuuming the coils with the hose from your vacuum. Carefully dust off the coils with a rag. Use a toilet brush for difficult spots.

      Mix one part warm water with one part bleach in the spray bottle, and saturate the coils.

      Replace the cover to the air conditioner and allow it to run for 30 minutes, which will allow the condensation to flush the cleaner from the coils.
