How to Eliminate Attic Moisture by Ventilation

Attic moisture is a problem that many homeowners may overlook because some do not visit their attics often. Attic moisture can be a threat to the structure of the attic as well as lower the effectiveness of attic insulation. Additionally, it can also cause ice buildup on the roof of the house. With proper ventilation, these problems can be avoided.

Add soffit vents to encourage airflow into your attic. Airflow is what is needed to prevent the buildup condensation and re-circulate the air coming into and going from the attic. Soffit vents will allow air to enter through the attic at the base of the roof. Soffit vents are ideal for attics with smaller vents or a ventilator that is located at a high point in the roof. If a soffit vent already exists within the attic, ensure that perforated material is not installed on top of solid material.

Install an attic fan. A solar attic fan is environmentally friendly and is an optimal choice. In summer months, the solar attic fan will work to keep the attic cool. The fan can be installed with the soffit vent. Many solar attic fans can move 800 cubic feet of air per minute when the sun is shining.

Reduce activities within your home that can cause a build-up of moisture. The build-up of moisture within the home that contributes to moisture in the attic is known as "the stack effect." Limit the use of humidifiers. Any home that is properly insulated does not require the use of a humidifier. Ensure that the clothes dryer within your home is vented to the outdoors. Moisture from clothes that are being dried can cause a build-up of moisture. Additionally, refrain from storing large amounts of firewood within any heated area of the home.
