How to Lower a Thermostat 10 Degrees

According to Bill Prindle, the deputy director for American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), lowering your thermostat one degree Fahrenheit can save you approximately 3 percent on your energy bill. Therefore, if you lower your thermostat 10 degrees Fahrenheit you can save almost 30 percent on your energy bill. To maximize your energy savings and lessen your carbon footprint, you should lower both your wall and water heater thermostat 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

Instructions

  1. Wall Thermostat

    • 1

Locate your wall thermostat. Some homes have dial thermostats and others have programmable thermostats.

    • 2

    • 5

Locate the temperature gauge attached to the bottom region of the water heater.

    • 6

Turn the dial on the temperature gauge 10 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the original temperature setting. You should set the average temperature for your water heater between 115 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
