A ceiling-mounted exhaust fan is preferable if the space and design permit it. If the shape of the roof or location of the bathroom prevents this option, a vent fan can be installed in a wall that faces the building exterior.
Solid metal ducting is more reliable and effective than flexible ducts commonly used on clothes dryer exhaust systems because its smooth inner surface enhances the flow of air.
Install the fan and ducts so the airflow goes directly outside. Ducts that empty into attics or walls encourage accumulation of damaging moisture that frequently causes mold and mildew, drywall deterioration, wood rot and insulation damage. Using only one duct makes repair, maintenance and replacement easier.
