How do I Vent a Cathedral Porch Roof?

Cathedral roofs, like any other type of roof, require proper ventilation. If the cathedral roof is not properly ventilated, you will notice moisture stains on the ceiling, the surface of the roof will start getting deformed and the roofing paper will start cracking. Luckily you can fix the ventilation problem before the problem gets worse. With some properly placed roof vents, your cathedral roof will begin getting the ventilation it needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the local county building department and ask for the required amount of roof vents for the size of your house. The answer will be the number of roof vents you must install.

    • 2

Measure and mark the size hole you must make for the vent. The size of the hole you must open will be on the packaging of the roof vent. You are going to measure and mark the size of the hole on the soffit of the cathedral porch roof. The soffit is the overhang of the roof.

    • 3

Drill a hole on the four corners of the mark you created for the hole opening. Cut the hole with the reciprocating saw. Stick the blade through the holes you made with the drill, and cut following the outline you made with the marker.

    • 4

Place the roof vent on the hole, and secure it in place with staples. If your roof vent uses screws, then secure the vent with screws and the drill. Read the roof vent's instructions for specific installation instructions, as they vary by brand.

    • 5

Install the remaining roof vents, according to the number the building department requires. Measure and mark the opening, drill the corners and cut the hole open. Secure in place the vents per the manual.
