The Clay Flue Size for a Coal Stove

A flue is a tube in a chimney through which exhaust gases are vented from a coal stove to the outdoors. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a deadly gas. The chimney is often lined with a clay flue liner. Clay can withstand high heat and varying temperatures.
  1. Rectangular Flue Liners

    • Clay flue liners come in many different shapes and sizes. Rectangular and square flue liners commonly come in 4-by-8 inches up to 24-by-24 inch sizes. Standard sizes create an effective interior flue area of 23 to 431 square inches.

    Round Flue Liners

    • Round flue liners start at 3-inches to 36-inches in diameter. The effective interior flue area provided by standard sizes runs from 12 to 989 square inches.

    Determining Size

    • The most common size of a clay flue is 6-inches in diameter. The flue size you need is largely dictated by your coal stove. The owner's manual will specify the proper flue size for that particular model. It is important to use the proper size flue to avoid exhaust leaks within the home.
